A Duke psychiatry professor recently completed a study that found that African American youths are less likely to develop substance abuse problems or drug problems when compared to Whites, Hispanics, Native Americans, and people of mixed race. This goes against the common perception in America that young African Americans are more likely to use drugs. In fact, the only group that used drugs less than African Americans was Asians. The percentage of Native Americans that struggled with substance abuse was the highest, at nearly three times the percentage of African Americans. The troubling part about this study is that African Americans are still arrested at a rate ten times higher than whites. It seems that every time I begin to think that we’re starting to get past the whole racism thing, I end up finding something like this.
